What is the right path when navigating your grief journey?

[WATCH THE VIDEO HERE OR READ THE ARTICLE BELOW].

Some people suggest that grief has a predictable path. I disagree.

In my experience and as I’ve watched others, there is no one predictable path. There is something else. Instead of looking for the right way, look for ways to increase your chances for a healthy outcome during your unique process.

Move forward in your grief by exercising certain muscles that make your grief journey thorough and transformative. Use muscles that promote healing and hopefulness.

One of those muscles is the ability to make wise choices.

I had a light bulb moment in my grief journey after my motorcycle accident. “I don’t need to simply react to what had happened. I had the power to chose my response to my situation!”

The idea was taught by German concentration camp survivor Viktor Frankl.

Everything can be taken from a person but one thing: the last of the human freedoms — to choose one’s attitude in any given set of circumstances.

What We Can and Can’t Control

So much of life is made up of things we can’t control. We can’t control what people say or do. We can’t control who gets sick or who gets better. We can’t control what our boss says or does. We can’t stop the tornado from landing on our house.

What we can control is our attitude in any given situation.

Between stimulus and response there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response. In our response lies our growth and our freedom. — Viktor Frankl

If a loss has happened to you, don’t look for the perfect roadmap. You instead look for the attitudes that will hold you steady and keep you moving forward.

Choices to Make

  • Choose gratitude for what’s left.

  • Choose the belief that you will get through what you’re going through — some how.

  • Choose to believe there are empathetic people out there who can help you.

Those choices will help shape the grief process that will end up being the right process for you.

What choices have you learned to make as you’ve navigated the losses in your life?
